16 Going on 21: Teenagers aren’t Teenagers Anymore

Christ, that sounds like something that would be pulled straight out of Fox News’s asshole.

Earlier today I stumbled into the Beauty Guru Vlog rabbit hole on YouTube, and found the channel “miaphammy”. Before I start this discussion, I want to just preface that I don’t hate her, or think that what she’s doing is bad. She’s just out there living her best life.

One of Mia’s most recent posts

She’s simply dazzling (thank Thesaurus.com for that one). How old do you think she is? You’re not dumb, you know I’m talking about teens; imagine if you stumbled upon this image without my aid. My assumption was that she’s in her early 20’s.

She’s 16.

In her “spending 1000 dollars ____ makeover” she details making over herself: hair, fake tan, waxing/micro needling/tinting eyebrows, face masks, and at the end she does her makeup. Things adults are often seen doing. She’s seen getting tattoos (which is legal to get tattoos before being 18 with parents written consent). Note that I haven’t watched all her videos, and I’m no Mia Pham expert (sounds creepy as all hell… “Yes, yes I’m an expert on all things [insert random person here]. I even know what their B.O. smells like.” That made everyone uncomfortable… I’m not sorry enough to delete it.) and I have no idea who she is beyond her edited polished persona, neither do you (unless of course you know her in real life or you are her, are some kind of higher being blah, blah, blah).

Seen in her comment section is the various “your 16? girl you look at least 19” statements, and the sentiments about how “back in my day I looked like a naked mole rat and played hop scotch with people in white vans! Kids these days…” or kids 13-16 saying how they look like a sack of potatoes with copious amounts of emojis. This is what sparked my interest.

Let me ask you a question you can’t answer; why are (online(?))teens looking (and often acting) so much older than they are? Some are seen acting sexually, some just look much older by makeup, filters, poses, and editing. Is it attention seeking behavior, or is it a shift in society? Maybe teens are being pressured by the evil social medias. Probably Satan trying to be rebellious again.

There are no cut and dry answers. Danielle Bregoli after being featured on Dr. Phil then became a meme (thank god it’s dead) was acting out for attention. At first it was probably for her parents, then it got blasted on TV. Money can be made where there’s attention, positive or negative. She pushed it until it’s last dying breath, and is now a rapper.

WoahhVicky, Dani Cohn, Loren Grey, any topless teen guy on TickToc who keeps biting his lips or does that thing where he taps his forehead and rolls his eyes back, are doing it for attention to some extent. Dopamine is one hell of a chemical. It’s easy to see why they do it, having a notification pop up telling you that someone liked your post or started following you makes you feel important, special, and seen. Kids don’t get that attention. Hot, attractive kids get that attention. Raging hormones and an undeveloped brain blind us to our actions. Including me. Sure, twerking for some followers seems reasonable until you realize that some fucking creep is beating off to it. That’s the dark side, the underbelly so to speak. Not all teens are Mai, a chic chick making pretty videos and doing steller makeup.

Some are forced into it. Parents see the profitability of exploiting their kids, feeding them super-grow so they can make suggestive content.

Depression plays a part to it as well. It’s estimated that 20% of teens are depressed, and that depression causes you to mature faster. I have been diagnosed with MDD since I was 10, and don’t live in the best household. People IRL often assume I’m over 16, online many I’ve interacted think I’m in my 20’s based on how I write and express myself. Or maybe it’s because I apply some grammar rules, or because I read and know some fancy-ish words. Who knows.

Teens could also be pressured by those they idolize online to look and act a certain way. This has been a factor since popular media existed. It’s worth noting that influencers act personable. You aren’t just a fan, but you’re “”family””. Maybe I’m so old because some (okay, most) of my influences are middle aged English men. In my defense, Neil Gaiman is fantastic.

Whether or not you like it, teens are looking older. Like most things, this isn’t inherently bad. But it isn’t great. I know I’ve felt stripped of my childhood for being so aware of the things and people around me, how shit the world can be, and how much I envy my idiot peers. It’s this mad dash to being grown up, and one isn’t aware how little responsibility we (teens) have until we have to carry a full load. There’s mixed messages of getting attention for acting/looking older, but being told to enjoy being a kid. The freedom of being your own person, living your own life without the influence of parents. It comes with a price. How much are you willing to pay? Because I want a refund.

I Think My Parents are Slowly Killing Me

That’s exaggerated, and we all know it. This post has nothing to do with domestic abuse and everything about diets, and diet culture; more specifically for teens.

I, like 2/3 of the American population is overweight, and it’s not a huge mystery why. We eat terrible foods, we don’t exercise as much as we need to, and we’re lazy. So, to counteract that my family and I went onto a somewhat faddish diet.

In February I started my weight loss journey. 5’9 and 207 pounds, I didn’t look good, and felt even worse. Sick of it all, I cut down everything and tried to eat more veggies and fruits where I could then I started to exercise. I did all of this on my own initiative, my parents supportive (one of the few times in my life…).

Over about four months I dropped 15 pounds, then plateaued. Tripped, fell, and now I’m just laying there in a pool of self pity. My life as a middle-class white kid is soooo difficult.

I, the poor cricket and my Mother the trapdoor spider, pounced on me and dragged me into her underground chamber to tell me that our family is going on a keto diet. Keto, in the most basic terms: you consume so little carbs and so much fat that your body starts to use fat as an energy source appose to its normal settings of carbs. Shocked I was’t just eaten and stunned that my redneck, pick-up driving, meat and Trump loving step-father also wants to go on this diet. Within two days we were no longer indulging in sexy slices of bread, but instead worshiping the All Mighty Avocado. The fuck just happened?

Okay, I may be exaggerating just a tad, my parents worship meat. I too, love chicken and consume it regularly (it’s not a problem… define problem…). It’s been a little over six weeks and we’re holding tight to the bandwagon. I more so begrudgingly. The results? We’ve all lost weight and are more or less healthy… I think.

Keto is such an extreme diet, you’re cutting out an entire food group, an entire source of nutrients. I’m concerned. When we first went on the diet, I had to see my pediatrician (of 10 years) for unrelated reasons, I asked her if it’s healthy for someone my age to go on such a diet. Very nonchalantly she responded, “Will you stick to it long term?” I shrugged and nodded, “Do you think it’s sustainable?” I responded the same way, “As long as you get enough calcium, I’m fine with it.” Internally I just screamed I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I’M DOING OR FOR HOW LONG I’M DOING IT AHHHH. My internal dialog consists of different variations of yelling at any given time. I did some mediocre research into keto, the general consensus for people my age being (wrapped finely into nice words of course): Kids need fiber and carbs.

Okay, then.

When the time comes for me to permanently fuck-off from my household, I won’t be on keto. I’ll probably become vegan avoiding the animal products industry like the plague, and start on collecting cats before my mid-life crisis kicks in. Just staying ahead of the game ya’ know?

Legitimately though, I don’t want to mess up my metabolism or unwittingly heighten my chances for The All American Diseases™. I also don’t want to be overweight. The lines blur between the points of health risks of being overweight and losing the weight in a way where it’ll haunt you like the time you said “you too” after the waiter served you dinner. Back and forth. Up and down.

I’m young though, and my body bounces back. Reliance is like a warranty, it expires. So, we’ll just have to wait and see if I end up like the blueberry kid from Willy Wonka.

My Superiority Complex about Other LGBTQ+ People

The one thing I thirst more for than the attention of my peers is validation.

As a self-proclaimed narcissist, I want to delve into my story certainly not for context. Last year, roughly around the time of writing this, I came out to my Alt-Right Southern Baptist Mom as transgender. It’s up to you to decide whether that was incredibly brave or stupid. As one would expect, she didn’t take this well, and threatened to kick me out of the house and fly me to Texas to live with my emotionally abusive father (she left him for a reason).

Here is where I want to circle around my point like a vulture and some roadkill, Mom, who in no doubt in my mind loves me, she tries to show it in a way that doesn’t garner a good reaction out of me. The best way to explain this is through her favorite saying: “God created you a girl, and it goes against him to try to be a boy.” Poking about I wanted to find out why she didn’t/couldn’t/wouldn’t accept me, because there’s science to back “Transgendersim” up! surly she can’t deny me now!

To almost insanity, I did research, started debates, and kept pushing buttons to see where I could find a “reasonable” reason other than “God created you a girl, blah, blah, blah.” I was dumbfounded by her stubbornness, but mainly hurt. That hurt is like a bruise that wells up deep inside my chest and throbs. She thinks that by not catering to “The Emperor’s New Cloths” mindset she would be of help to prevent me from going to Hell. Needless to say the worst place for your child to be if you’re a concerned Christian mother.

I kept falling farther and farther down the Trans-Medicalist or TransMed or Truscum mindset/rabbithole for validation. And the validation of my “trans-ness”. Transmed is the belief that you need gender dysphoria to be trans, and that anyone without explicit dysphoria isn’t trans and shouldn’t be in trans spaces. The people who are more “outlandish” with their gender expression; a trans-woman with a full beard who makes no attempt to fit most of the social rules of being a woman, for example, is faking it, and would be (sometimes jokingly, though mainly seriously) called a “TransTrender”. The fact that she could easily shave her beard and have the opportunity to present more feminine, and hasn’t taken it, must mean that she’s doing it for attention. Most “Transtrensers” are AFAB (Assigned Female At Birth), and are in their teens to mid-twenties. Stereotypical “Trenders” have short brightly colored hair, wear attention grabbing clothing, and reside on Tumblr.

All of us can agree that in your teens and twenties you are exploring your sexuality, gender identity, and whether or not you still want to listen to MCR. Now days online and in certain areas it’s allowed, at times encouraged, to explore these things publicly. As it should be. So… What’s the problem? That maybe not all of these kids (rich coming from a 14 year-old) have dysphoria?

The only problem that I see is young teens rushing into medically transitioning, when they may have just been exploring, and something felt good for a little while, then they decided to go further. They start on hormones, and when the changes start to happen, they get extremely uncomfortable and want to get off. Sadly, most changes, and some of the most noticeable changes are permanent. Granted, this is if their parents are accepting, and willing/able to start, and that after they are able to see an endocrinologist after that insane wait time that they still want to go through with it. Transmeds blame Tucute people for glorifying medically transitioning, thus it’s all their fault for this young trans kids ruining their bodies. I also want to note that there’s this paranoia with trans people my age (in which I partook/partake in) about if they’re “faking it”. One would know if they’re faking it… right?

Tucute is the thought that you don’t need gender dysphoria to be trans, and that whatever you say you identify as is as so. These folks are the most infamous when it comes to media coverage on the Trans Community. Often shown as extremist SJW’s that think that being cis or gendered is bad. DoWn wItH tHe PaTrIaRcHy!!!! Spoilers, most often they aren’t… that.

Here’s the tea so to speak, at least for me. I saw a video recently by ContraPoints on YouTube simply titled “Transtrenders”. There’s Natalie looking stunning as always (so I may be a bit of a fanboy… Just be ready for that).

“Transtrender” Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdvM_pRfuFM

She’s a trans woman who makes political videos surrounding trans topics. I enjoyed videos before, and decided to watch this one when it popped up in my recommendations. Whilst watching I couldn’t help but to get sucked into the discussion at hand: Is it truly validating to be presenting exactly how our society tells us to? At the start I felt the answer was an obvious yes, passing (being perceived as your gender by strangers) is the best thing in the world. But that wasn’t all that she was arguing. It became clear that the character, Tiffany Tumbles, representing the Transmed side was extremely insecure about her identity, clinging to the argument that her her gender dysphoria is what makes her a “valid” trans person. Keep in mind that there was so much more nuance, and it goes so much further than my limited vocabulary can handle. Just watch the damned video.

It shocked me how much I saw myself reflected back from Tiffany. I always had a surface level acceptance towards the folks who are Non-Binary (and those who are more atypical with their identities), sure, I respected their pronouns, but at the heart of the matter I thought that somehow I was superior to them because I’m comfortably sitting in the binary. I was happy thinking that gender couldn’t be more complex than pink and blue. All those outside are just attention seekers and trenders. The ironic (or is it hypercritical?) thing is that when I first started exploring my gender I thought I was a Demiboy. I remember thinking similarly about gay people when I was younger… they were deliberately being gay for attention, and that they had full control, and were doing it to spite God. Feels weird typing that out.

It came from a place of bitterness. Why should I accept those who don’t have “”scientific reasoning”” for why they do the things they do, when I have to fight tooth and nail for my own Mother to look at the science that there is to prove my existence. For her to accept me. Then it stuck me harder than my depression at 3:00 am:

I don’t need to rest my very existence and feelings on being trans by some studies.

I’m perfectly real. My feelings are perfectly real.

My dysphoria isn’t a prize for winning some pity points.

The video brought up the analogy that a mother deeply loves her child, and would do anything for it, but there isn’t science that explicitly proves that that love exists. But it does. Human feelings, gender, and sexuality are so very complex that modern science can barely cover the tip of the iceberg.

There is no satisfying answer, a true or false to any of this. Of course there are people who fake it for attention, the bisexuality craze existed to some extent, there are girls who sexualize gay men to the point where they want to be one (so on and so forth) but they’re the minority in a minority! It’s okay to just take some people at face value, and not psychoanalyze their identities and beliefs. Do you enjoy being around them? Yes? Good. That’s all that matters. At the end of the day we’re all humans (and by humans I mean lizard people, get bamboozled, fool!).

Love, this ass-hat.

P.S. Mind my spelling, spell check can’t fix everything, and I need everything fixed.

Who am I if I’m not your long lost cousin?

It seems that I’m being pressured, and not exactly against my will, to make an “About me Post”. Fair enough, I adore talking about myself.

This is my half hidden face, turned slightly away for drama.

I didn’t bother with FaceTune to remove my acne, nor did I sculpt away my double chin. I am far too lazy to for the upkeep of keeping my skin edited to a baby-smooth texture. Oh- and there’s that whole thing of beauty standards that pressure people to be insecure about their body/face because they aren’t the standard for Cosmopolitan.

Here’s the “interview” that WordPress gave us:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal? I seek attention. I slurp it down like it’s a soup that Gordon Ramsey prepared himself.
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about? My transition, general trans topics, and slice of life antidotes. I’m dumb, and someone can learn for my dumbassery (it’s a word now).
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog? Anyone who feels they need a friend, or anyone who just wants to laugh with (or at, I don’t judge, if I could I would laugh at myself) someone.
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished? Honestly, if I blog successfully, that’ll be a trophy in of its self for me. But I want to create a community of sorts, and at some point monetize this site to earn some coin.

I’m just some random kid hoping to express my thoughts, have some fun, and latch onto my sanity for dear life as I clamor to make it to 18.
